Episode III: Evolution of Medical Records – Regarding the Chasm

The third episode returns to a clinical viewpoint, an NHS-based clinician in particular; Dr Rupert Fawdry.

Dr Fawdry has written extensively in www.fawdry.info (The Electronic Encyclopaedia of Perinatal Data), www.eepd.org.uk (The Electronic Encyclopaedia of Personal Data) and others publications and media. He brings a much needed breath of realism to the electronic vs paper medical record landscape. We particularly enjoy the view that “A paperless NHS still appears about as likely as a paperless loo”. Dr Fawdry also identified a Chasm (illustrated) that exists between the worlds of (acute) medicine and (healthcare) information technology. In the IT world, the new technology that is always just around the corner is the panacea to the adoption and use of electronic medical records. Indeed, while technologies such as cloud and mobile computing are great innovations, their direct relevance to assist clinicians and improve patient outcomes may be drowned in “clouds of fantasy”. The world of IT does not get the complexity and the need for cost-effectiveness. The marketing is working however; computers are indeed magical creations.

Billy joined Sláinte Healthcare in 2009 as Chief Operating Officer, where he has responsibility for day-to-day technical operations, new product development, and commercial assessment of new products and markets. Billy now holds the position of CTO, bringing over 20 years of experience in product and business development in electronics manufacturing and software automation. Billy was VP Engineering and VP Business Development for Xsil, Director of Software, Pentus Technologies. He has a Bachelor’s and Masters Degrees in Engineering from the University of Limerick, and a first class honours MBA from Smurfit Business School, UCD.
