“make them use it” is not a valid EMR adoption strategy

"Of course we are all aware that a traditional EMR rollout is a huge financial commitment (thus raising the financial risk considerably, in addition to the operational risk of upending the healthcare organisation for a minimum of two years while the project is implemented). In many cases, those risks are well flagged and whilst typically underestimated, they have at least been given strong consideration. However the biggest risk to such a project is usually one that doesn’t receive much attention – user adoption"

EMR Implementation – Big Bang or Phased Approach?

"One question that we have come across with clients time and time again is “How should we implement an EMR?” This usually refers to whether a hospital should take a Big Bang approach to the implementation of Electronic Medical Records or phase it in over time. One of the largest concerns with hospital management during the implementation of an EMR are..."

Vitro Software, a leader in digital medical record solutions, has launched a landmark integration with Consultmed, setting a new standard for secure, compliant, and interoperable healthcare communication. The rollout initially at Wandi Nerida, Australia’s first residential facility for eating disorders, operated by the Butterfly Foundation, marks a major milestone in modernising participant care through fully connected digital workflows.

Following Vitro’s Software successful digitisation of Wandi Nerida’s clinical records in 2024, this new integration enables clinicians to seamlessly send referrals, discharge summaries, reports, and clinical correspondence directly through Consultmed’s encrypted messaging platform. The result: real-time communication with GPs, referrers, families, carers, and community teams, helping close the loop on participant care.

“This partnership goes far beyond integration; it represents a transformation in how care is coordinated across healthcare settings,” said Simon Harland, Director of Sales and Marketing APAC at Vitro Software.“By embedding secure, compliant communication within the Vitro platform, we’re empowering cliniciansto deliver more connected, informed, and real-life, timely care while meeting the highest standards in participant privacy.”

The Vitro Consultmed integration arrives at a pivotal moment as Australia prepares for sweeping reforms to the Privacy Act, raising the bar for how personal and health information must be managed. All healthcare organisations, large and small, will be required to demonstrate stronger safeguards, with the likely removal of exemptions for small businesses. This is ahead of the curve in readiness for the evolution of electronic medical records in a digitised format.

A/Prof Vikram Palit, CEO of Consultmed, said: “With upcoming changes to privacy legislation, the team at Wandi Nerida recognised the importance of secure, auditable communication with the wider care network. We were fortunate to support them in a phased approach— first digitising intake and referrals, and now enabling clinicians to safely share letters, assessments, and discharge summaries with GPs and carers. It’s been a thoughtful, step-by-step process grounded in doing what’s right for participants and their information.

”Danielle Dougherty, Operations Director at Wandi Nerida, added: " This integration is a game-changer for how we deliver care at Wandi Nerida. For the first time, our clinical teams can securely share vital information with external providers, including referrals, assessments and discharge summaries. This not only improves continuity of care but also protects the privacy and dignity of our clients, many of whom are navigating highly sensitive and complex journeys. Vitro Software and Consultmed has given us a platform that’s both clinically powerful and future-proof in a fast-changing regulatory environment. It’s an investment in safer, more connected care."

Fiona Miles, Health Information Manager (HIM) and Director of Health Informatics and Clinical Solutions at Vitro Software, acknowledged the importance and necessary steps the team at Wandi Nerida has taken to ensure the interpretation and application of the privacy law in implementing the integration between Vitro DMR and Consultmed. “What this now achieves is a secure platform for the release and disclosure of participant information that meets legal and ethical privacy standards in the management of the health information at Wandi Nerida”.

Key Benefits of the Vitro–Consultmed Integration:

  • Secure, Encrypted Communication: Ensures all messages are trackable, auditable, and compliant.
  • Integrated with the Clinical Record: Reduces administrative burden and eliminates duplicated data entry.
  • Enhanced Continuity of Care: Keeps all care providers connected throughout the participant journey.
  • Supports Privacy Act Compliance: Future-proofs providers as regulations tighten.
  • Improved Participant Experience: Enables faster, clearer, and more informed care transitions.
  • This collaboration signals a broader shift towards interoperable, privacy-first digital infrastructure, a vital foundation for modern, sustainable healthcare systems.
  • Through this innovation, Vitro Software and Consultmed are not only delivering best-in-class technology but are setting the pace for what’s next in Australian healthcare.
