A purpose built digital medical record for the Bendigo ‘smart’ Hospital

Vitro Software has successfully implemented a digital medical record for the new Bendigo Hospital as the first stage in its journey to become a paperless hospital.

Vitro Software has successfully implemented a digital medical record for the new Bendigo Hospital as the first stage in its journey to become a paperless hospital. The new Bendigo Hospital is a critical investment by the Victorian Government within the Loddon Mallee region and the city of Bendigo.

Mr Peter Faulkner, Acting CEO Bendigo Health said “The hospital is a very technically-enabled environment and the Vitro Software platform has given the hospital the opportunity to commence its digital patient medical record journey.

“The first stage of that journey has been the implementation of the digital medical record which paves the way for the hospital to realise key quality and safety improvements that can be expected through the implementation of electronic patient records,” said Mr Faulkner.

The vision for Bendigo Health and the region more broadly is underpinned by the principle of one record for the patient available at the right place at the right time, and was a key platform for the new hospital to enable the transition in a staged process to an electronic medical record.

Mr Bruce Winzar, Executive Director Information Services and CIO Bendigo Health said: “The digital medical record has given us that opportunity and it’s been a successful implementation both from a clinical and administrative sense.”

“If we look at the some of the benefits provided by the Vitro Software platform they are primarily around access to the digital medical record from anywhere at any time. It allow us to share the patient information across the breadth of the hospital services including aged care, community health, acute and even into the hospital’s psychiatry services.”

“We are able to share data across the organisation, it’s timely, it’s good quality capture, and it’s a safe way to manage our data,” said Mr Winzar.

Mr Jeff Smoot CEO ANZ Vitro Software said: “We are delighted to work with a prestige organisation such as Bendigo Health. The platform built for the hospital will deliver better access to quality data, new ways of driving efficiencies, and all the advantages of cloud-based computing.

“While the project was complex, the quality of the data that can be now be captured by the bedside - achievable with a digital medical record - has enabled Bendigo Health to look at things like clinical analytics, business intelligence, and population health management,” said Mr Smoot.

Less reliance on paper records has also made a big impact on the hospital’s health information services, moving from a very physical process of finding and pulling paper records for clinics and emergency presentations. With the implementation of the digital medical record that workload has decreased dramatically and delivered a decrease in manual handling risks.
