Nurses should be consulted in the early stages of EMR implementation so healthcare technology companies can create a user friendly EMR. 98% of nurses surveyed in US hospitals agree that they have never been included in hospital technology decision or design. Only 15% of those surveyed thought that their IT department were receptive to nurses’ suggestions in improving electronic documentation. These numbers simply have to be improved upon.

There is a perception that paper is more secure because it is tangible and can be kept under lock and key. The security and privacy risks to changing how we collect, store and share health information are valid, but not insurmountable. The use of electronic systems for the collection, storage and transfer of health information is key to tearing down some of the current barriers to safe and efficient healthcare.
